Designers often use rope as a design elements and it is always useful to have rope in vector format to create any shape and colors you need. This simple tutorial is about creating rope in Illustrator.
Our first step - create shape like on the picture below by using Rectangle Tool.

Now rotate a little our shape and use Pen Tool to add heading. Copy this heading also to the bottom of the shape.
I made a copy of shape to make heading more accurate.

Finally we got shape as on the image below. Open "Pathfinder" window, select all pieces of the shape and press "Add to shape area" button to get one whole shape.

Make stroke, copy our shape several times and add two guides directly on the intersection of the shapes.

Select all copies and go to "Object - Path - Outline Stroke".

You must get this:

Now make one whole object and crop it due guides location, like shown below.

Add some Fill and grope you objects.

Open "Brushes" window and Drug-and-Drop your object. Window "New Brush" will appear. Select "New Pattern Brush" and press"Ok".

Window "Pattern Brush Options" will appear. Just press "Ok".

Congratulations! You created new brush.
And now most pleasant moment. Create any path with Pan Tool or Rectangle Tool...

... select it and press your new brush. Ready!
